I found this point particularly interesting for one reason: you can’t save yourself from the fashion world. This is not so different from all the aesthetics that are spreading todays on socials: We dress like this therefor we are like that! and so here we come with the dark-academia look, the cottage-core, the emo-kid and so on, shaping not just our looks but also our behaviour. So, think about the ’60s to ’90s subcultures, such as punks or hippies or grunge kids, but also our loved-hated ’80s Italian “ paninari”: people needed to make a statement with their appearance, to express their values and lifestyles through the way they presented themselves, and they needed to do that both for an internal need of expression but also to pair with the ones that were like them. The main statement of the book is that fashion holds in itself two main forces, both individual and social: the need to distinct us from others, in order to affirm our individuality, but also the need to fit in, to identify with people that are like us and stick with them, with some sort of external representations of who we are as a group. Written in 1910, a time of big social, political and economic changes in Europe, it is considered the one and only short essay of the time that covers the topic of fashion with such a precise eye.ĭespite a few considerations that today are not so lovely to read, such as class distinctions and poor consideration of those who are not rich and so do not participate in the fashion dictations, things that sure did not pass unnoticed by me, I think this little book still has a lot to tell us, to help us reflect on the social and personal meaning of fashion nowadays. So today I’d like to share a few thoughts with you. I attended an aesthetic philosophy class and curiosity did not kill the cat ( It’s me, I’m the cat, lol) but indeed helped her find a few fashion-philosophy titles to read.Īmong the titles that my professor suggested to me, one caught my attention: “ La moda” by the German phenomenologist and sociologist Georg Simmel. Hope this was helpful!! Definitely, give it a go I really love their shoes. This semester I found out that philosophy and fashion had more in common than I thought. I've gotten 3 out of the 4 pairs around the $25-$45 price range oppose to their original $70-$100 range. I've refrained from giving a full 5 stars as the initial pair I purchased had the effect of not being worth the price-point so since then i've only purchased the footwear when they're on sale. I've worn them to concerts and to company parties - always gotten compliments & always stayed comfortable (of course within reason). I always get compliments on them and store them in their original box as they're not really "everyday" footwear for me. I've purchased my shoes over the course of 2.5 years and have enjoyed them! They're comfortable, stylish, and affordable when purchased on sale. I can attest to not being satisfied with the "lower" quality compared to how theyre advertised online but that comes with purchasing clothing, shoes, jewelry online but the quality isn't bad. I always buy my LAMODA shoes when theyre on sale! I own 4 pairs: platform boots, 2 summer sandals, & platform heels all of which came in great condition. Shoes themselves are really comfortable and profiled right to ordered foot sizes. I know that there's "wide fit" but I can't believe that I am "wide". It would be nice to add gums or something streachy/adjustable near the zippers to fit more sizes. I love lamoda because of quality and unique designs but this thing with narrow calfs space is a real issue. I have average, not chubby legs but it's a big problem for me with another higher boots. And my last pair which dissapointed me to the max is "Ready" high knee chuny platforms. with my experience it's not an issue but for begginer it can be. My 3rd pair is "Static" and I was surprised how they are comfortable! They are in feeling like slippers but idk if my pair's platforms are lil shaky or it's this model. Later I got "Tell me lies" and then met a problem: the shoes are too narrow for my calfs! Tried to stretch them but there's a little progress and still I need an 1cm to fully close a zipper but it's still wearable. My first pair is "Freestyle" and they are just perfect.
